The drive there is the part people tend to underestimate. The camp sits out on the open plateau, well off the main road, and you reach it down an unpaved piste. No public transport runs anywhere near it. Street taxis usually wave the trip away, and the ride-hailing apps have a habit of cancelling the second they spot a destination that isn't on tarmac.

How long is the drive, and what's the route?

From central Marrakech to Scarabeo, plan on up to about an hour. Where you start and how the traffic moves on the way out of town are what shift that number. Coming from Marrakech Menara Airport works out much the same once you're through arrivals. The first leg is easy tarmac as you clear the city and aim for the plateau. Things change on the last stretch, where the sealed road runs out and a desert piste takes over to the camp.

That final piste is short, but it's the real thing. Rocky and uneven in spots, it's exactly where an ordinary city car starts to struggle and a driver who doesn't know the area wastes time hunting for the right turnoff. The transfer is priced per vehicle, not per head, so a couple or a family sharing the ride brings the cost per person right down. The rates stay simple:

• €80 for a one-way private transfer, or for a same-day round trip.
• €140 for a round trip on separate days, when the driver comes back to collect you on a later date.

Every transfer gives you a private vehicle you don't share with strangers, door-to-door service from your pickup to the camp entrance, room for normal travel luggage, and a licensed, insured driver behind the wheel. We don't charge for the few minutes it takes to load bags, or for a short wait at a meeting point you've agreed beforehand.

Riads and hotels in the medina

Loads of Marrakech riads sit deep in the medina where no car can reach the door. We set up the closest car-accessible meeting point and the driver takes your bags from there. Not sure where that point actually is? We pin it down with you in advance, not on the morning you're leaving.

Anywhere in Marrakech city

Staying in Gueliz, Hivernage or anywhere else around town? The driver collects you from your address or a landmark you name. Just give us the camp when you book. "Agafay desert" on its own covers a huge spread of ground, and the driver needs to know it's Scarabeo specifically so he can plan the right turnoff.

Why not just grab a street taxi or an app?

Fair question. The honest answer: both work fine for short hops inside Marrakech, and both make a poor match for a desert camp.

A grand taxi can physically do the run. The fare gets negotiated rather than fixed, though, and the number a driver floats to a visitor with luggage is rarely the one a local would pay. No guarantee he commits to the unpaved final stretch, either. A drop at the roadside and a walk in across the sand is a genuine possibility.

An app ride is built for paved, in-city journeys. Send it to a camp at the end of a dirt track and acceptance gets shaky. Plenty of drivers bail the moment they clock the destination, and even when one accepts, the app barely accounts for that last approach to the camp.

Booking a private transfer ahead trades a little spontaneity for certainty: a fixed price, a confirmed pickup time, a driver briefed on Scarabeo by name, and a vehicle that fits the road. Most guests time things for late afternoon, so the camp comes into view as the light softens over the plateau. That's the busy window too, because the camps build their whole evening around sunset and dinner. If golden hour is the plan, book a pickup that leaves Marrakech with a comfortable buffer rather than the bare minimum drive time. An hour of margin beats the handful of minutes a tight schedule might save.

Scarabeo is remote, and chasing down a last-minute ride out of the desert is far harder than settling the time before you ever leave the city.

• Agree the return when you book the arrival. A remote camp is no place to improvise a ride home.
• Share your flight number for airport pickups. The driver can then track delays and wait without you paying for the gap.
• Flag car seats or extra luggage in advance so we send the right vehicle.
