The Risks of "Ndrive" and Street Hail
Many travelers arrive in Marrakech assuming they can simply hail a yellow taxi to go to the desert. This is a common misconception that often leads to frustration. Here is the reality of transport in Marrakech:
1. The "Petit Taxi" Restriction
The small yellow taxis you see everywhere are legally classified as "Petit Taxis." Their insurance and operating license strictly prohibit them from driving outside the city limits. The Agafay Desert is located 30-40km outside the city. If a Petit Taxi attempts to take you there, they will be stopped by the Gendarmerie Royale (Police) at the city exit, and you will be forced to exit the vehicle on the side of the road.
2. The "Piste" (Off-Road) Factor
The Agafay Desert is not a paved parking lot. While the main road (R212) is asphalt, reaching camps like Inara Camp, The White Camel, or Scarabeo requires driving 5 to 10 kilometers on rocky, unpaved off-road tracks (known locally as "La Piste").
Standard street taxis often refuse to drive on these tracks to avoid damaging their suspension. Unofficial drivers may drop you at the edge of the asphalt, leaving you to walk 45 minutes through the desert with your luggage. Taxi Agafay vehicles are specifically maintained for these terrains, and our drivers are experts at navigating the rocky paths directly to your camp's reception.
Can you pick me up from Marrakech Airport (RAK)?
Yes. We offer direct transfers from Marrakech Menara Airport to Agafay. Our driver will wait for you at the arrivals hall holding a sign with your name. The price is the same as a city pickup.
